New Coordinator Announced

January 7th, 2020

The Acton BIA (Business Improvement Area) has a new coordinator. Local resident Alex Hilson has taken over the position.

“I have worked with the Acton BIA through a variety of channels over time, both as a volunteer at BIA events and through my work as an arts and communications professional” said Hilson. “The well-being of Downtown Acton and of the general community has been a major focus of mine over the last couple years. I’ve derived great satisfaction working with residents, local business owners, nonprofits and government and am looking forward to growing and building upon those relationships in this new position”.

A Background in Community Work

Hilson brings a broad range of community experience to the role, working with a variety of organizations in a contractual role, including the Acton Music Centre, Acton UP, The Acton Tanner and the Town of Halton Hills. He sits on the boards of the Acton Foodshare and Inspire Halton and volunteers for Prevnet, Mediaeval Productions and the Communications Committee of the Anglican Church of Canada, among other roles. He was chosen as one of three Canada 150 Ambassadors for the Town of Halton Hills and has been recognized by the Associated Fundraising Professionals and the Halton Hills Cultural Round Table for his volunteer work.

What does the Acton BIA do?

The Acton BIA was created in 1977 through a bylaw passed by the Town of Halton Hills and approved by the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). BIAs generally oversee the improvement, beautification and maintenance of municipally-owned land, buildings and structures in the area. They work to promote, stimulate, and strengthen the economy surrounding their district, and support their local community.

“The Acton BIA welcomes our new coordinator and is looking forward to new things downtown”, said BIA Vice-Chair Monica Galway. “It’s going to be a big year for us and we’re excited to get moving”.
