A resolution passed at Monday night’s Council Meeting called on the provincial and federal governments to immediately enact legislation to support the fiscal health and prosperity of the local business community.
Town Council’s resolution included a call out to the Province to immediately freeze the ability of landlords to evict commercial tenants for up to 30 days following the declaration that would see the end of the (COVID-19) emergency.
“Businesses are hurting,” said Mayor Rick Bonnette. “We will see closures, we will see the impacts on our restaurants, retail storefronts, malls, plazas and other business tenants unless the upper orders of government fulfill their promises to enact measures in aid of our local business owners.”
The Mayor referred to the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) program announced by the Government of Canada on April 24 and noted the need for other supports such as easing the program’s qualification restrictions and allowing flexibility for tenants to qualify for rent subsidies in events where the landlord does not apply.
“Applications are being accepted now and I encourage business owners to apply for the Commercial Rent Assistance program,” said Local and Regional Councillor Jane Fogal. “It doesn’t matter whether you hold a mortgage or not. This is an opportunity to support your tenants and help keep our economy open.”
